Raenette’s Beauty Favs

Ladies, if you are in your 40s, 50s or 60s and are still wearing the same makeup that you did in high school, STOP!! Remember the old saying, less is more?? That’s the rule of thumb for applying makeup as you age. So toss out the pink frosted lipstick, electric blue eyeshadow & step into the 21st century!

Disclaimer: the products listed below will not make you look 20 again, erase wrinkles, double chins or make you look like a Victoria’s Secret supermodel.

1.) I love this kit from Stila because everything I need is in one convenient compact. They have several different ones to choose from depending on your skin tone. The one I chose is for RRWWs (really really white women). It comes with 2 blushes (pink toned & peach toned) and 5 different eye shadows. There’s even a sparkly shadow for evening or if you just want to get your shine on during the day. I was afraid that the pink blush would be too light, but it is a perfect color for everyday use and looks so natural. Also, it’s perfect for travel & to throw in your purse. What’s not to love??

2.) I think mascara has been the biggest challenge for me when it comes to makeup. One will lengthen lashes but doesn’t stay on. Another will stay on but doesn’t lengthen. Another will stay on & lengthen but irritates my eyes. Also, I have an issue with half the mascara ending up under my eyes & not on my lashes. Like I need something else to accentuate my raccoon eyes more! This Benefit They’re Real mascara is the winner winner chicken dinner!! The brush grips & pulls the lashes out really well & it also has little spiky brushes at the end that you can use to get to those hard to reach lashes. And, why yes my dear, They’re Real! 😂😂😂

3.) Were you born in the era where you used baby oil & iodine as suntan lotion?? Guilty! Unfortunately, we did not know at the time the damage the sun could do until it was too late. Now we have the scars to remind us; sunspots, skin discolorations, red moles, skin cancer, etc. This leg spray from Sally Hansen is so great at covering all those imperfections, & the best part is that it doesn’t smell & won’t come off until you wash it off. Plus, if you’re a RRWW, it adds some color to your legs without having to lie in the sun or go to a tanning bed. Why waste time sunbathing when you can waste it shopping, eating or drinking??

4.) Now this contouring thing is a new ball of wax for me. When I read that you could apply certain colors to your face & make it look thinner, brighter & younger, I said, “where do I find this funhouse mirror??” All roads lead to Ulta, so off I went in search of this elusive creature. But when I got there, lord, I was so overwhelmed!! I said, ” Lord please send me a sign” & instantly the clouds parted & there it was! A paint-by-number contouring kit by Ulta beauty! Now, I’m still learning and improving each day, but I can definitely tell a difference in my face on the days I use it versus the days I don’t. For step-by-step instructions on how to use a contouring kit, please refer to my sister Anjanette’s blog from earlier in the week. She is definitely the makeup guru in this family!

5.) Do you have raccoon eye syndrome?? I do! Every.single.day! Sometimes that’s what happens as we get older, the skin under our eyes thins & bluish veins become more visible. And guess what, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it except get fat injections under your eyes, and I’m not at that point (yet). So, the best you can do is find a concealer that covers, lasts, and doesn’t accentuate wrinkles. I have tried just about every concealer on the market, and this full coverage, anti-aging, waterproof concealer from IT cosmetics is the best I have found to date. With this concealer a little dab will do ya. Now, I’m going to be straight up & tell ya that this concealer does not cover my circles 100% of the time, but it does better than the others I’ve tried. Do you have a favorite concealer?? Let me know. I’m always looking for the next best thing.

6.) Yep, that’s Vaseline you’re seeing. Now I already know what you’re thinking, “Vaseline?!? Eeeewww who uses Vaseline? It’s so greasy.” Now, simmer down. I used to feel the exact same way until I started using it back in high school (100 years ago) for really bad cracks in my heels. I started applying Vaseline to my feet right after showering and in a couple of months, voila!, no more cracks! Once you get used to it you do not even notice that it is greasy, & it absorbs really well, especially if you have really dry skin like mine. Now my feet are as soft as a baby’s butt!  If my feet start getting a little crusty, I take a pumice stone to them (after showering) & then apply Vaseline! If your feet are REALLY bad, then apply Vaseline & throw some socks on. Nighttime is a great time for this. However, this method would not work for me because I’m at the age where my internal pilot light is on, & I can’t tolerate anymore clothes than absolutely necessary. Vaseline is also great for elbows. I also use it to remove eye makeup. It will also tame flyaways. Just rub some between your fingertips & rub through your hair. So, don’t knock if till you try it. Vaseline is cheap, has so many uses, & I haven’t found anything that works better on dry skin. Are you a Vaseline fan or foe??

Makeup can be a beautiful & powerful tool, but nothing is more beautiful & powerful than thousands of intelligent, strong, determined women  coming together to support one another, like they did at the Women’s March in Raleigh this past Saturday. I was honored to be in their company.  #womenlead

We so appreciate y’all stopping by this week!! Come back next week for some Valentine’s LOVE. Have a great weekend! 😍😘❤️
