Styling It: White Shirt

By looking at it, one would think that a plain white button down shirt is a bore snore. Au contraire! A nice white shirt is one basic piece that every woman (and man for that matter) should have in their closet.  If you’re like me, you have several.  There are about a million ways to wear it. Ok, that may be a bit of an exaggeration, but there’s a lot!!!

Let’s say it is Saturday, and you are meeting some friends for lunch. A perfect day if you ask me.  Just throw that white shirt on with your favorite pair of jeans and a cute pair of either flats or tennis shoes (sneakers if you aren’t from around these parts).  Whether you tuck it in, leave it out or do the half-tuck thing may depend on how you are feeling that day. Having a poochy belly day? Leave it out. It still looks sharp as a tack.  Oh, and don’t forget to accessorize.  Never forget that!! It’s no problem with a white shirt. Any color will work.  Easy peezy.

You can change the feel of this outfit by just switching your flats for heels and popping on this sexy hat.  Well, hello big boy. How ya doing (wink, wink)?  This panama hat from Kohl’s Sonoma Line is great, because you can fold it up and put it in your luggage.  No worrying about it getting flattened. And the best part is, it adjusts on the inside so it fits my big ol noggin.  I’m planning on taking it with me to Ireland for those rainy days.

If you work in an office or just like to don the naughty librarian look, the white shirt is a must.  As you can see, I left 3 or 4 buttons undone and put a black cami underneath.  Then, I tucked it into a black ponte pencil skirt (another great basic).  I incorporated a pop of color into the outfit by adding a red beaded multi-strand necklace.  Simple open-toe sandals and a classy purse complete this professional/sexy look.  Feel free to toss on a bad ass leather jacket or sweet cardigan if it is chilly out.

Speaking of a cardigan (how’s that for a segway?), a button down shirt can take the place of one.  I don’t always feel comfortable showing my bare arms, especially in the Spring when I am still pasty white.  Instead of grabbing a sweater to wear over this little sleeveless dress, I left a white shirt unbuttoned and tied it at my waist. Yee Ha!!! Isn’t it cute?  My brown Frye cowboy boots round out the look.  I’m ready for a fun night out on the town.

There is one thing about a white shirt that some of you will not like to hear. I’m sorry, but YOU HAVE TO IRON IT!!! If you don’t, you will look a hot mess and totally lose the pulled together effect.  At the very least, throw it in the dryer along with a damp wash cloth.

Go get that white shirt out of your closet right now!! See how many ways you can style it.  If you don’t own one, Lord have mercy, go buy one.  You will be amazed at how many times you reach for it.

Isn’t this FUN?!?! I can’t wait to see what Raenette will be styling. I’ll see y’all back here Friday!
