I definitely owe my acquired love of thrift stores to my friend Jane. After I saw all the goodies she would find at thrift stores, I said “take me there!” When we worked together in Apex, we would often drive or walk to our favorite thrift stores during our lunch hour. Sometimes we were shopping for clothes, and other times we were shopping for trinkets, books, dishes, etc. Now, my friend has a real artist’s eye, and she could find the most mundane object and turn it into a thing of beauty. You should have seen her office at work. It looked like something out of House Beautiful, and it was fully furnished with thrift store finds! So, any chance that I get to check out a new thrift store, I’m in.
I will admit that I didn’t have my best haul at the ones we visited recently, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to give up. Oh hell no! There are so many good ones in and around Raleigh it’s ridiculous! I mean one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Right? Now, I know that a lot of folks don’t like thrift stores because you have to look through so many racks, but as a certified TJMaxx-aholic shopper, it’s something that’s second nature to me. It’s like looking for a little hidden treasure. Lol!
Can you believe that Cameron Village has a thrift store?? I am shocked that they would even allow a thrift store to exist alongside all their other high falutin stores. So when my sister and I happened upon it months ago, it was a happy little find. Now, Fifi’s is like all other thrift stores in that you have to visit them on a routine basis to snap up the best bargains. So if you don’t find anything on your first visit, don’t give up. Hint: Ask the employees if there are particular days on which they put new merchandise out on the floor, and then plan your trip around those day(s).
My first find at Fifi’s was this snazzy (yes, I said snazzy) black skirt. Now, I have a hard time finding skirts that don’t cling in the wrong places and are the right length. While this skirt is a good length, it does have a tendency to accentuate those areas that don’t need accentuating so, choosing the right shirt is a must. My go to blouse for this skirt would be my white oxfordshirt that I bought earlier in the season from Target (but I was just there yesterday and they still have them) tied at the waist and accentuated with some snazzy (there’s that word again) accessories. What drew me to this little black skirt in the first place was the gold and silver zippers. I am a sucker for zippers. They just add that little “oomph” to any article of clothing.
Now, the rule of thumb for thrift stores is that for every 3 things you find 2 will be duds, and one will be a keeper. This one was one of those duds. I was so hopeful that it would fit, because I love the color. Turquoise is a universally flattering color. It just looks good on everybody! This blouse was so tight across the bust that I had to get my sister, Antoinette, to help me out of it. I thought I was going to have to buy it, because I wasn’t going to be able to get it off without cutting my way out. Lol!
Now dud #2 was this cute little pink checked gauze shirt. Again, I was hopeful, because I loved the color and the lightweight material. Again, it was too tight across the bust. Aaarrgghhh….Now folks, I am Farrrrr from endowed in the bust area. I’m not sure who is a size large and flatter than me, but evidently they exist somewhere. Of course, that could be why this shirt is at a second hand shop. Lol!
Ok, I got my 2 duds out of the way. On to another winner. I was praying to the clothes Gods that this blue flowy top would fit, and by golly it did! Here I have it paired with some white capri pants, gold necklace and tan sandals. Also, I can’t wait to put it with my white denim skirt and red and white striped wedges. Bring on the 4th of July and the fireworks!! Lol! Plus, look how big it makes the girls look. Wowza! I need one in every color! 😀😀😀
My sister and I did visit another thrift shop, Upscale Cheapskate, where she got lucky, but I did not. Didn’t find one darn thing! That’s the way the thrift shop dice roll sometimes.
Some other great thrift stores to check out in the Raleigh/Apex area are Clothes Mentor, Adore, and My Girlfriend’s Closet. Don’t be afraid to check them out! Let the treasure hunt begin!
